BADIA DI SAN SEBASTIANO, ALATRI, LAZIO
Built in late 5th century, the Badia di San Sebastiano, or the Abbey of San Sebastiano in English, is located in the saddle of Mount Pizzuto in Alatri, an ancient town in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio. As one of the best preserved early monastic buildings in Europe, the majority of the monastic complex remained unaltered where unique features including frescoes in the Lower Chapel and vaulted storage rooms are retained.
Water penetration and aging over the years has led to degradation of the timber plank-and-beam roofs of the monastic complex, in which some parts were at risk of collapse. Carrig was engaged as the Conservation Architect and Consultant in 2015 to provide specifications for the repair and refurbishment of the entire roof structure of the complex.
