Valentina is an architect and conservation consultant with Carrig. Having taken her Masters Degree in Architecture at the University of Naples, she worked as an architect in Naples and then in her hometown of Avellino (Campania, Italy).
After some years in practice she took a Masters in Conservation focussing on Industrial Archaeology; she wrote her thesis on one of the oldest historic railways in Italy, the Avellino-Rocchetta S.A. in Avellino province. In 2010 she won a fellowship for a PhD in History and Conservation which was concluded in 2013 with a thesis on the Reconstruction and Conservation of Historic towns in Irpinia (Campania, Italy). After taking her PhD, Valentina moved to Ireland and worked for ICOMOS Ireland before joining Carrig in 2014. Valentina currently works for the Italian branch of Carrig. Valentina's Projects include: Project - No.10 Mill Street 2015-2017 Description - No. 10 Mill Street is one of the oldest surviving structures in the Coombe & Newmarket area and is listed as a Protected Structure on the Dublin City Council Record of Protected Structures. Originally constructed as a Dutch Billy c.1720, the building’s façade was altered in 1891 with the re-facing of the upper storey in red brick. In an area of the south inner city which has seen considerable change over recent decades No.10 contributes significantly to the historic context & appeal of the Newmarket quarter. Extensive conservation works have been carried out to include the re-construction of the 19th century roof based on surviving historic evidence, removal of the cement-based render to all elevations with an ambitious programme of brick repair to the principal street facing elevation and refurbishment of the interior. The project was completed in April of 2017. Project - Gardens International Office Development Client - Limerick City and County Council Description - Carrig were commissioned by Limerick City and County Council to produce conservation specification (report and drawings) for the works to be carried out within the Gardens International Office Development project on Henry Street, Limerick, which comprise three historic structures – the Hanging Gardens (b.1808) and two former Post Office buildings in the General Post Office (b.1903) and the Mercantile which is thought to be contemporary to the GPO. The General Post Office (GPO) is listed as a protected structure under the current Limerick City Development Plan (RPS Ref. 275). Project - Badia San Sebastiano – Alatri (Fr), Italy 2015-ongoing Client - Foundation Leslie Description - Roof Refurbishing and consolidation works on the medieval abbey of San Sebastiano in Alatri (Frosinone) Italy Project - Badia San Sebastiano – Alatri (Fr), Italy 2015-ongoing Client - Foundation Leslie Description – Roof Refurbishing and consolidation works on the medieval abbey of San Sebastiano in Alatri (Frosinone) Italy Project - Avellino Rail Station – Procedure for enlisting the Rail Station Industrial Heritage – 2018-2019 Client - MiBACT; Partner - Soprintendenza SABAP Avellino Salerno Description - This project entailed researching the archives, libraries and online resources in order to assess the value of the Rail Station Buildings as Industrial Heritage. The information was collated in report format which was submitted to the Ministry in order to have the railway heritage items included on the list of protect historic structures. The Historic Rail Station buildings are listed since July 2019. Project - American Ambassador’s Residence, Dublin 2015-2018 Client – American Embassy Description – Carrig were commissioned to carry out a conservation assessment on the roofs of the outbuildings at Deerfield, comprising the gate lodges and other subsidiary buildings which form the 18th century estate and lie within the curtilage of the protected structure. Thirteen separate buildings with a complex range of construction phases were assessed and recorded under this project. Project - Appia Regina Viarum, a project for protecting and promoting the Ancient Roman Road, Campania 2020-2021 Client - SAB Perugia Srl for Ministry of Culture Description - Researching, photo-surveying, georeferencing and filing historic architectures, monuments, and any other element of interest located within a radius of 1 km from the Via Appia. Project - Architect and conservation consultant Client - Ministry of Culture - Soprintendenza ABAP Salerno Avellino Description - Collaboration in any activity directed to protecting, promoting, and restoring the Architectural heritage of Avellino county as defined by the Act Codice dei Beni culturali D.Lgs. 42/2004. |
