IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Impact statements are prepared as part of design proposals for new developments, at or in close proximity to existing protected structures or other sites of built heritage significance. They are also relevant where alterations are proposed to existing protected structures. Impact statements are often obligatory in planning applications.

Example: wonderful barn, Kildare

In 2016, Carrig Conservation conducted an environmental impact assessment at Barnhall, Leixlip, County Kildare to understand the heritage significance of the site subjected to proposed development. The south of the site has been defined by the curtilage of the Wonderful Barn and Barnhall House as accepted by Kildare County Council, which is defined as a radius of 200m centred on the Wonderful Barn, a protected structure associated with the Castletown House demesne.

Carrig can assist architects, engineers and planners with reviewing proposals and can make observations and recommendations in line with Best Practice and Architectural Heritage Protection guidelines. We seek to be involved in the design process from the earliest possible stage of a project to ensure essential information from a conservation perspective is provided to our client as soon as possible. The Impact Statement takes into account the relationship with new building works or neighbouring structures and outlines the impact of the new development on the character, setting and special heritage value of the protected structure or site.
