CONSERVATION REPORT

A conservation report is the primary document used to assess the problems and needs of an individual building and to detail a strategy for addressing them. To better understand the building or structure a conservation report will draw together many different types of information. From the in-depth understanding gained in this process of drawing together information, an informed conservation strategy can be developed and outlined.

WHY DO YOU NEED A CONSERVATION REPORT?

A conservation report is often required when applying for planning permission on protected or historic structures. A report may also form part of an application for funding. As a multi-faceted record and assessment of a building or structure, a conservation report is an essential tool in planning and carrying out any works proposed to a building or structure. A conservation report can contribute significantly to the ongoing well-being of a building or structure by ensuring that problems are addressed appropriately and that potential problems are avoided.

WHAT may BE COVERED IN A CONSERVATION REPORT

The contents of a conservation report will be tailored to address the individual building or structure under review. Depending on the needs of the building, particular elements may be developed in more detail in the report. Some of the different types of information that may be included are:

  • A written description and photographic record
  • The legal protection status of the structure
  • Historical research, including historic maps, photographs and drawings where available
  • A statement of the significance of the structure
  • A condition assessment with description of damage and identification of causes
  • Analysis of the materials
  • Survey drawings and drawings recording conditions and detailing recommendations
  • Recommendations for conservation, a methodology and/or specification
  • A statement of the impact any proposed works may have on the structure
  • Measures that could be used to mitigate the impact of the proposed works
