Apollo Theatre, London

The Apollo Theatre is a very fine if not one of the best examples of true Victorian Grandeur and Opulence. It was commissioned by Mr. Henry Lowenfeld and designed by architect Lewen Sharp in 1899. Planning was granted early in 1900 and the building was complete by February 1901. The theatre is a Grade II listed building.
The façade is in the French renaissance style, the plan simple and compact avoiding long corridors — the heating system was imported from Germany and innovative for a London Theatre using a large shaft bringing fresh air from below and distributed at all levels.

The main construction is a mixture of large steel frame and load bearing masonry — the very decorative ceiling is of a Fibrous plaster which is hung off a combination of main steel members and timber noggins and ties. The roof structure is of a clinker cast in-situ concrete cast onto a steel frame and it is supported by steel fabricated truss members. Some 88 tons of steel was used in the construction of the roof.
Carrig was appointed in late 2015 to inspect the hipped concrete roof and the embedded steel truss structure, and provided  recommendations for the repair, stabilisation and upgrading of the roof structure.
