the former parish church of st mary's (a national monument) was built c. 1202 as the place of worship for the prosperous Merchant community of kilkenny's high town. |
A Brief History: Constructed in the early English style, the Church originally comprised of an aisled nave, with north and south transepts and a long narrow chancel. Over the course of the building's rich, 800-year history, substantial alterations took place including the removal of the side aisles and a shortening of the chancel. Further significant works were carried out following deconsecration of the church in the 1950's when St Mary's found a new community use as a parish hall.
