St. Catherine's Park

a survey of the gravemarkers at St. Catherine’s Park to determine condition and relocate.

A Brief History: St. Catherine's Park was formed in the 1980s from the reordering of the graveyard behind St. Catherine's Church on Thomas Street, a proportion of green space in a highly built up city area.

Carrig was involved in repairs to the wall at Thomas Court and the repair and relocation of the grave markers within St Catherine’s Park between 2017 – 2019. The conservation of the park was part of the Liberties Business Area Improvement Initiative led by Stephen Coyne of Dublin City Council. Some of the larger gravemarkers were relocated and put against walls within the park, making them more stable. The area around the other gravemarkers was paved with Leinster granite and bright French gravel.

In addition to the graveyard work, Carrig also undertook the repair of the Eastern Boundary Wall at St. Catherine's Park. The extant upstanding section of wall represents a multi-phase construction dating from the mid-17th to early-18th century and represents the earliest surviving section of the graveyard boundary.  The wall stands c.2.2m above the former graveyard level and is bounded to the east by St. Catherine’s Lane West.

The work involved the removal of cement render from the calp stone and replacing with lime render, the brushing down of frost damage to the capping and treating the wall top with a slurry coat.
