MATERIALS & PAINT ANALYSIS

Carrig’s name and reputation has been built on its unique approach to building forensics and in particular our understanding of built heritage materials. Where possible we will take samples of all materials and submit them to our laboratories and depending on the requirements we will carry out in-depth materials analysis, such as petrographic, chemical and environmental on all natural stones, brick, terracotta, concrete and other man-made porous fabric.

By understanding the materials composition and the soiling or decay mechanisms we can then prescribe solutions to cleaning, consolidating, paint removal and repair techniques that will be totally compatible with the substrate in question.

Many historic stone types are no longer available as quarries ran out or closed — knowing the composition allows us to determine a suitable compatible replacement material. Mortars and plasters are also important to understand materially so that when recommending repairs or matching material one can confidently specify a suitable and compatible material composition.

PAINT ANALYSIS

Analysis of historic paints is also now a service we can offer, samples are taken and prepared and a full and in-depth analysis of layer by layer — once complete we date the various layers and give a colour code on a layer by layer basis.
