Climate Services

Carrig has extensive experience in conducting climate risk assessments and climate change adaptation plans for cultural heritage sites, working with stakeholders and providing training on climate change and cultural heritage.

Climate Risk Assessments

Climate change is the fastest growing global threat to heritage sites, many of which – natural, cultural, and mixed – are already being affected. Cultural heritage sites are often situated in coastal areas, near rivers, lakes or on cliffs, meaning that they are often exposed to the environmental elements. Sea level rise, storms, drought, flooding and fire are some of the factors that pose risk to heritage sites. In order to future proof these sites, it is important to understand the hazards and impacts, to determine what can be adapted to reduce the impacts so that these sites can continue to provide all the values that they do.

Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) offers a systematic approach to assess and better understand the potential risks posed by climate change to a historic place. The aim of the assessment is to identify and prioritise the potential risks for a particular site and this can subsequently be used to develop a Climate Change Adaptation Plan.

Our CCRA works consists of indepth background research into the sites, engaging with stakeholders to determine the condition of the site, the values of the site and the projected climate change factors that will likely affect the site. Through technical and community workshops, we develop a list of priority risks and potential adaptation solutions which can then be used by the clients to develop and adaptation plan.

sTAKEHOLDER eNGAGEMENT/mEDIATION

Stakeholder engagement is a key part of any site management, especially where adaptation is required. Heritage sites provide many values, including social, cultural and economic and in order to maintain a balance between all, meaningul stakeholder engagement is required.

We have conducted many stakeholder workshops for clients such as government departments offices and local authorities. We provide mediation services as well, as a neutral third party between stakeholders.

tRAINING/cpd in cULTURAL Heritage and Climate Change

We have provided training and CPD courses to heritage professionals and the civil service on cultural heritage and climate change. As new theories and understanding of climate change and its impacts emerge, it is important to stay informed so that effective adaptation can be achieved.

Whether it is site managers, heritage professionals, local authority officers or local communities, we can provide accessible and engaging training on climate change and cultural heritage.

You can view our report for Local Authorities on guidance and case studies on increasing the resilience of heritage resources to current and future climate conditions.
